Antwerp and Charleroi are two of the five postal sorting centres of bpost in Belgium for the processing of mail and parcels. Vanderlande Industries supplied the fully automated parcel sorting systems, including conveyors, IT software and OCR & VCR equipment.

The challenge for the sorting system is to efficiently handle the wide variety of parcels weighing from 50 grams up to 30 kg and with sizes up to 900 x 600 x 600 mm. Vanderlande Industries offered the CROSSORTER system to meet these demands. The sorting capacity in Antwerp is 13,200 parcels per hour and in Charleroi 8,800 parcels per hour.

The aim of the sorting equipment is not only to sort parcels to different destinations, but also to capture the barcode and the weight. This data is needed to support the track & trace service provided by bpost and the item-based billing required by some customers.

“Vanderlande Industries has built a fast, efficient and low-noise system that fits perfectly into the bpost sorting centres. The infeeds have a simple and effective design, and parcels of all shapes and sizes are sorted efficiently and reliably.” Mr. E. Vincent, Senior Technology Advisor bpost.
