Alicante Airport is one of the most important tourist and business destinations in Spain with weekly flights to over 50 destinations, handling over 8 million passengers in 2003. The airport is managed by the public business entity AENA, which is responsible for over 60 airports in Spain and Latin America.
Vanderlande Industries was selected for its extensive baggage handling experience and ability to offer the most economic solution. The project was executed turnkey by a joint venture (U.T.E.) between Vanderlande Industries and Controlmatic.
The departures baggage handling system, supplied in 1995, consists of:
- 38 Walk-through check-in followed by two collector lines
- Automatic sortation to 16 laterals by multiple VERTISORTER systems
- Extension for the arrivals system to 9 claim carousels
Vanderlande Industries was also awarded a service contract to carry out the maintenance of the system.
