Batch picking and sortation system for underwear for Marie Claire

Marie Claire is a well-known Spanish retailer of men’s and women’s underwear. The company built a brand new distribution centre in Borriol, Spain in 2003. Vanderlande was asked to design and implement the order picking system.

The facility handles 46,000 SKUs and processes more than 600 orders per day. The order picking system is based on Vanderlande's Batch Picking System (BPS) concept. The CROSSORTER cross belt sorter, with a capacity of 6,000 items per hour and 160 outfeeds, forms the heart of the operation.

Products are picked in 5 batches and placed manually on a conveyor system, which brings the items to the induct stations. Items are inducted manually onto the sortation system. At the outfeeds, items are loaded into cartons and shipping documents are added. Completed cartons are closed and pushed onto a conveyor system for transportation to shipping.

Main customer benefits are:

  • Substantially improved overall efficiency
  • Significantly improved accuracy (over 98% read rate, even on very low-quality labels)
