GLS hub handles high parcel volumes with short processing times

GLS is a specialist in logistics and express services for over 220,000 customers in Europe. The GLS Hub in Utrecht has been GLS’ central hub for the Netherlands for more than a decade. The large volumes of parcels, short span of processing time and ever-increasing demand for high-quality service were the reasons to invest in an advanced parcel sorting system. Within the past decade the system has been updated and extended to enable further growth, and today is still meeting the company’s requirements.

The equipment installed includes VERTISORTERS and POSISORTERS and a Destination Server.

The process within the hub is as follows:

Parcels arrive loose loaded in trucks from other depots and from customers. Parcels travel from the extendibles onto 10 infeed lines. Each pair of infeed lines is merged into one. The 5 remaining lines are each equipped with an automatic barcode scanner, and a VERTISORTER determines whether a parcel goes to the blue or to the red sorter.

Each POSISORTER is positioned along the sides of the building and has 9 outfeeds directed inwards, using the least space possible. Each sorter is prepared for future extensions with 4 additional diverts. Parcels are sorted out at the designated output and are then loaded into the trucks using gravity roller extendibles.
