Sortation process

The configuration of an optimal automated sortation centre is based on the following parameters:

  1. Arrival and departure patterns of vehicles and vehicle types
  2. Required peak and average volumes per hour, per day, per week
  3. Characteristics of the various products handled
  4. Reservations for buffer areas, i.e. for roll containers, pallets
  5. Building shape, office space and other requirements

Basically two types of systems can be distinguished:

Line sorter system characteristics are:

  • modular approach with induction on independent merge conveyor
  • medium- to high-capacity sortation
  • small footprint

Loop sorter system characteristics are:

  • direct induction on loop
  • high-capacity sortation
  • automatic recirculation
