Vanderlande has been selected to construct the baggage handling system (BHS) at Qingdao’s new airport in China’s Shandong province. The new airport has been designed to accommodate up to 35 million passengers a year and will be a regional hub, with connecting flights to Korea and Japan. It is expected to open in 2019.

Shandong is home to around 98 million people, and Qingdao – with a population of eight million –lies between Shanghai and Beijing. Due to rapidly increasing passenger volumes, combined with the limited space at Qingdao’s existing airport, the Chinese government made the decision to relocate the facilities to a new site. Vanderlande will supply the following equipment in support of the new BHS:

• 11 check-in islands with 208 desks
• three HELIXORTER tilt-tray sorters
• 14 tilted arrival carousels
• a make-up area with 19 tilted carousels and 48 laterals
VIBES Essentials high-level controls (software).

In addition, Vanderlande will deliver site-based services. This will be the sixth BHS project featuring a site-based service team in China. It will also be the company’s fifth project in the country to utilise HELIXORTER technology, making China the largest installed base for HELIXORTER tilt-tray sorters worldwide. The successful completion of the project will see Vanderlande further strengthen its leading position in the region’s baggage handling market.
