Australia Post has a long history, which stretches back to 1809 and the opening of its first post office in Sydney. Today, it is a wholly owned, self-funding, government business enterprise. Australia Post’s aim is to be a profitable, reliable and sustainable postal service to the Australian nation, and to provide customers with a truly unrivalled suite of ecommerce-driven logistics, supply chain and parcel delivery solutions for consumers, local and international businesses and online marketplaces.   
Challenges
As part of its Future Network Project, Australia Post needed to update its parcel processing network. The company faced a number of challenges to improve its operations and prepare for future growth. These included reducing manual operations, downtime and transport costs, while increasing its market share. In response, Australia Post doubled the floor space at its facilities in Sydney and Melbourne. During execution of phase 1 of this project, Australia Post kept running its normal operation in the existing section of the building. Once the takeover of phase 1 took place, Vanderlande installed the remainder of the system in the existing part of the building.
Requirements 
Australia Post required a fully automated solution that increased its parcel handling capacity at both sites to 1.3 million items a day in total. This will ensure that the company is optimally positioned to meet future demand.
The solution
The company needed a reliable partner that understood the challenges it faced and could consult on the most effective solution to meet its specific requirements. At both sites, the solution comprised several crossbelt sorters (CROSSORTERs), which sort directly into containers, on to extendibles for loose loading trucks, or into chutes for those items that need to be handled delicately. The CROSSORTER is a highly flexible solution for handling a wide range of products, from very small items through to bulky packages. In addition, it is 80% more energy efficient than traditional sorters, and offers 99.9% availability.
