KAIA Jeddah Hajj Terminal, Saudi Arabia

Owing to Jeddah’s proximity to Islam’s holy cities of Mecca and Medina, King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) is particularly noteworthy for its Hajj Terminal. It was built especially to handle pilgrims destined for Mecca to take part in the annual Hajj. Vanderlande delivered the terminal’s baggage handling system and has been responsible for services there since 2008.
Operator PPMDC chose Vanderlande to deliver a site-based service contract, ensuring a high level of performance while keeping the system up-to-date with industry developments. It consists of a site-based maintenance team and 24/7 hotline support for conveyor equipment, and IT and controls. The team – of around 25 service engineers – works in two shifts and is supervised by a Vanderlande maintenance manager and a controls engineer from Vanderlande.
The team is scalable throughout the Ramadan and Hajj seasons, and part of its responsibilities is to identify optimisation opportunities in close cooperation with the customer. This has already resulted in some system modifications that have enhanced performance.
