Vanderlande wins major BHS project at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport

Vanderlande has secured a contract to supply the baggage handling system (BHS) for Guangzhou Baiyun Airport’s new Terminal 3 building. The award includes a five-year site-based service contract.

The new BHS is based on Vanderlande’s TUBTRAX individual carrier system for the transportation and sortation of baggage. It also includes ADAPTO BAGSTORE, which provides 2,376 storage locations for early bags and enables an on-demand flight make-up process.

In addition, the solution features the company’s DROP@EASE self-bag drop system, which allows passengers to place their luggage directly into a TUBTRAX tub. This saves time at check-in, minimises in-system times and optimises the traceability of bags.

At this airport, DROP@EASE will be located in the nearby railway station. This will significantly improve passenger convenience by allowing people to check their bags before they take the train to the terminal.

The construction of a new third terminal is part of a wider expansion project at the airport. When developments are completed in 2025, there will be three terminals, five runways, a high-speed railway station and a satellite concourse.

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport catered for more than 40.2 million travellers in 2021, and serves as a hub for international and domestic travellers in and out of southern China. The expansion will enable the airport to handle around 120 million passengers every year.
